Pahala Plantation Homes Tour

The trip to the Pahala Plantation Homes was a delightful day despite the drippy weather.  I enjoyed touring the various old-style homes, store and bank which were all refurbished.  The building still had a quaint charm to them that shone through the new paint and varnish.

Kona Coffee Living History (Uchida) Farm Tour iMovie

Uchida Farm tour video in Hawaiian

The above link is to the iMovie I created about the Uchida family history as I learned about it on our Kona Coffee Living History Farm tour on February 5th, 2011.  This video is in Hawaiian so that my second grade Hawaiian Language Immersion students could view it.

Visit to Anna's Ranch, Waimea

My trip to Anna's Ranch was enlightening.  I loved learning the rich history of this noble woman and the legacy she left behind.  Although it's unfortunate she had no descendants, we are all blessed that her story is preserved in her estate for all to learn about.

Seeing the many antiques stirred images in my mind of a time not too far away where life was so simple and everyone worked hard.  I have relatives who have worked on Parker Ranch and other ranches.  The below picture reminds me of these esteemed "paniolo".

Being a "paniolo" meant that you were tough.  I still remember stories my tutu would tell me about her brother. He left a legacy that has carried on to his grand children and great grandchildren who participate in many paniolo-type activities such as branding and rodeos.  I wish that I knew him as well so I could see a living part of Hawai'i's vital history.
